Research Description

Dr. Mirmira’s research program over the past 10 years has centered upon the biology of islets as it relates to islet development/growth, maintenance, and survival. The laboratory has made seminal contributions to the area of diabetes research, including the identification of key histone modifications that facilitate or maintain insulin gene expression during conditions of islet stress, as in type 2 diabetes, and also the identification of the novel posttranslational modification hypusine in the response of islets to cytokine-mediated damage.
